I agree with you and we may need to be patient with Petty if he is going to be the guy. But its hard to stay patient when your QB play has been as bad ours has been throughout most of the past decade.

Jet fans have been patient with QBs who deserve patience. Which is exactly why Jet fans aren't patient with Smith because they've seen him piss away two seasons.
Fortunately, neither are Maccagnan, Bowles and Gailey which is why they immediately traded for Ryan Fitzpatrick for the short term almost immediately on arrival and then traded up in round four to land Bryce Petty for the long term.

Petty and Fitzpatrick will compete. Heaps and the QB Maccagnan drafts in 16 will be in the mix for backup roles
Glennon might end up competing with Smith for a backup spot somewhere if they both are signed by the same team

I don't like Smith as a QB, but I've said many times, the best case scenario for the Jets' is for Smith to come out and make the team his.
That's why the new CS is giving him the lead going into camp.
I just hope that they are truly going to let the best QB start day one. They'll be judged harshly by the fans if we have another BS QB competition, hand Smith the job, and have Smith cost the Jets another season.
Good analysis. I was at this event and heard him speak. I haven't watched this video but during the Q&A people asked him to compare Petty to other draft picks especially Mariota.
He didn't want to get into discussing other players but did mention exactly what you said. Petty has a STEEP learning curve. The only difference he mentioned between Petty and Mariota was the offense.
Baylor's spread is one read and that's it. Oregon had more going on in their offense which made it easier to evaluate Mariota.

They both worked their butts off to get the HC and GM opportunities they deserved. No way they let any player put them behind the eight ball in their first season

Macc seems to have come out of the offseason with an A grade. Great sign. Bowles we won't know about until the season is under way. So far it all looks good.
A few things Gailey said caught my attention. And most fans attention. Bowles tried to put things right. He softened what Gailey had said, but never said Gailey was wrong.
This will be Bowles first real test of how he is going to be perceived. If Smith cleanly comes in and clearly wins the job...Hooray!!!!!!! If it's tie, I still give the job to Smith. If Fitz isn't given any chance with the 1's, or out plays Smith, and Smith still gets the start, I'm going to start getting twitchy. LOL
Big 7-8 weeks coming up.
