I hope Petty is successful and I am rooting for him but the odds are truly against him. There are maybe two or three good starting NFL QBs that were selected out of the first round. Foles, Wilson and Dalton.

drew brees
russell wilson
tony romo (undrafted)
andy dalton
colin kaepernick
nick foles

He has all the physical tools needed to be great. It's up to Gailey now to teach him the pro game. I have a good feeling but only time will tell.

how long does gailey have left though honestly? Its like having sanchez have 3 oc's in 3 years, schotty, sparano, marty...can't do that to this kid.

Once he learns and settles down, we will absolutely have GREAT years with this kid under center.
We have the right coaches and the right GM to calm him down and give him the necessary time to adequately groom him properly. Not like the previous regime who wanted to see results immediatley.

*McCaggnan will surround him with talent he can grow with

*Gailey will coach him and place him in the best possible scenarios to grow

*Fitz (smart dude) will show Bryce the ropes on the NFL style spread offense.

*Bowles will know when the time is right for Petty to take the lead role.

No rush, this regime knows what their doing. No need to destroy a young QB potential like Rex did with Mark & Geno.

What a helluva off season!

Coordinators often coach into their 70s and beyond. Dick Lebeau? Tom Moore?

Gailey is 63. If he likes what he has here, who is to say he doesn't stay here beyond the developmental period for Petty?

I still dont think this pick is much different from the Titans drafting Mettenberger last year. Petty is a rd 4 QB that fits what what we're trying to do...see Mettenberger being a classic pocket passer with a live arm in Whisenhunt's offense. When our first rd pick comes up next year, I dont think this has any influence on us taking a top QB. With the number of first rd caliber QBs in next year's draft, and a handful coming from pro offenses (finally), I see Petty getting a shot to start over the next couple camps, but another top tier prospect being adde dto the fold next year unless Pettyt really blows their socks off in camp this season. Mettenberger did blow the Titans skirt up and they still took a QB that doesnt fit their system at all...wont be shocked if Cook or hackenberg are Jets next year despite this 4th rd pick...

Like you said, its always good to take 1 every draft/ Hopefully we start doing that.

i'm hoping the jets are not picking in the top 10 at next year's draft and thus not likely in the range to take a top QB.

well of course. but do think the jets are gonna be a picking in the top 10 next year? or maybe top 5 if the QBs are really elite?

I dont know where we'll be picking. Last year the Saints killed free agency and did okay in the draft replacing Sproles and other moving parts and had Sean Payton coming back to lift the team's spirits and direction...they appeared to be a team on the rise and fell flat.

Miami, SF, and Saints finished 8-8 and picked 12-14...so I think that would put us in striking distance of the top QBs...that's what I think as of today in terms of ball park where we project. Do you think this team projects better than 8-8 with all new coaches, schemes, terminology, and philosophies?

actually the 8-8 ballpark sounds reasonable. so i guess they could be in striking distance of a top 10 pick (this year the 7-9 teams picked 11-13, the 8-8 teams picked 14-15, top 10 were 6-10 or worse). but if hack and cook are as good as you seem to think they are (i like hack, not sold on cook being elite), then we are talking needing to trade into the top 5, if not top 1 or 2.

to use the words you used above, i would be shocked to see the jets drafting a QB in the top 5 next year

I certainly think this team is better than 8-8. I'll be rooting for Geno but I'm very confident a healthy Fitz, with very good OL play, could have every bit the season and impact Alex Smith had two seasons ago in KC.

not sure if we can get that. That's my biggest concern heading into next year. I hope there's a big time guard in June available after being a cap casualty.

Left guard play has been an indicator of the OL success since Mangold and DBrick got here. The OL line play is my biggest question mark going in because I feel if it's playing well the QB position will be allowed to let the talent do its work.

Between Carpenter, Aboushi, Colon, and the rookie Harrison, I think Guard will be adequate.

I agree! However; I think our defense is good enough to win us 9 games on their own if needed. If we can get at least DECENT play from the QB (any QB), we may win 10-11 games at least and be a wild-card at worst. I see it as Petty sitting and learning all this year. Geno and Fitz fighting it our for starter and Geno winning (could be wrong though). If Geno does win, he is on REAL THIN ICE and has about 2-3 games max of bad play before he gets pulled for the rest of the year. Fitz then comes in and hopefully can help lead us into the playoffs. Problem is and hopefully it won't happen, if Fitz gets hurt or starts messing up himself then where do they go? Back to Geno or to Petty?
