The Back-up Quarterback battle: Bryce Petty vs Geno Smith

As far as drafting QB's, when the Packers drafted Hundley, was that them not having faith in Rodgers?
If a GM drafts a QB who they believe can be a good Player that only helps the team. If both Petty and Smith show that they can both play in the preseason, thats a bonus for the Jets. Maybe they can turn Geno into another draft pick or Petty. They are both around the same age and Geno does have starting experience intros league.

Yup.

Drafting a young developmental QB rarely means anything other than picking potential down the line. Fans and media sound the doomsday music when this happens, and assume certainty on it's meaning.

Good post.

i think it had much more to do with, some liked hackenberg a lot & some literally didn't believe he should be drafted..

i can't ever remember the draft "experts" opinions being so wildly opposite of each others on a prospect.. can you??

all that said, there's not much more to do now then hope what maccagnan sees in him eventually translates to the field..

It was surprisingly stark. But I think that is because there was such a gap between his physical skills and his performance. His numbers freshman year, in O'Brien's system, were quite good, especially for a true freshman. In the new system, though, he clearly struggled.

I would guess some experts placed the blame on the kid, and others on the system. Our front office obviously put the blame on the system.

The BIG rap on Hackenberg is his inconsistent accuracy. 2013---- 58.9 2014----55.8 2015---- 53.3. That is horrific for an NCAA QB. Even in 2013, his great year, it was 58.9%. Anything under 60% in college is considered sub-par. He has a habit of flat missing wide open receivers.

Kid has all the physical talent in the world, very inaccurate. Nice kid, but he has to get the ball to his WR's.

Maybe Patullo can do something about that. I sure hope so

Kid has tons of talent

Tons of talent. Highest ceiling of any QB the Jets have drafted in decades.

But his floor is also very low. He could be a big-time starter, or a complete bust. Petty is safer, but not as gifted. Lower ceiling, higher floor.

This may be a part of the plan. Hack hopefully turns into a legit long-term starter, and Petty is a viable long-term backup.

Not sure I agree that Petty's ceiling is a good back up. Petty also has a bunch of talent, and a VERY strong arm. I like Petty a lot. Actually more then Hackenberg. Problem for Petty is that he is prematurely being put in a pressure situation this year. Possible that the Jets carry 4 QB's, but i doubt it. Would be a shame to cut such a talented kid before he gets a chance to develop.

IMO I think Macc and Bowles plan was to hope Petty stepped up enough to show he belongs, this year. Trade smith for jetgreen13 bag of rocks.

Don't forget, as a rookie, the Jets cut the two vets they had in camp, and let Petty back up Fitz for the first 3 weeks. Think they like him.

So far Petty has had bad OTA's, an up and down mini camp, and the first 2 days of camp has been up and down again. On one play he'll throw a ball that has the scribes going WOW, on the next look terrible.

He needs to step up quickly and get more consistent. Not even play better then smith, just show he belongs. Petty also has top shelf talent.

that's the intoxicating thing about the hackenberg pick.. petty is right up there with the most gifted QBs we drafted as well.. hell, we climbed well into the top 10 to draft sanchez & i don't have him being a more "gifted" QB than petty.. & i liked the sanchez pick a lot..

granted, all the gifts in the world mean very little if you can't get it done at the NFL level.. fitzpatrick is by far the least physically gifted QB in camp & he just signed for 12 million guaranteed this season at 33..

When the media asked Mac if Geno will be on the week 1 roster, Mac said "I assume so". That's not a ringing endorsement. Geno is has to turn some heads this camp

He will be here. Just look at the back of Fitz's baseball card. 16 games is not the norm. Unless they go with someone who has never taken a snap

BINGO!!!!!

That's it. Projecting what an NCAA QB is going to do in the NFL has to be one of the most difficult tasks in all of sports. So many top ten drafted QB's have gone bust. Tom Brady is certainly, at least, in the conversation for GOAT. He was a back up. His combine photo is a riot. Go figure.

Macc has 2 very talented young QB's. All he needs is for one to hit. If Petty comes into camp next year and lights it up, and Hack goes bust, nobody will be talking about Macc being a bum for wasting a pick on Hack. (Well maybe MJ will :18: Just kidding MJ) He'll be a genius for taking a star in the 4th. Reverse is also true.

IMO the Jets have 2 young QB's who either one could blossom into a star. They have a limited talent wise, but very wily, smart, and is willing to share, veteran, starting QB. That's why the Jets were so insistent that Fitz take a 3 year deal.

Again IMO, the Jets are actually in a good QB situation.................If one of the kids hit

smith's the fly in the ointment. Jets have a veteran, win now team, as much as the Jets would like to jettison smith, he is, right now, the best #2 QB on the team..........Some tough QB decisions coming for Macc

They would love to move smith. I don't know if they can.

and you know this how?

Looking at the actions they have taken this off season in perusing a mediocre, aging QB, while paying lip service to their current "starting QB" I'm willing to bet Macc/Bowles are not in luv with geno.

As Jetsgreen13 has pointed out, while Bowles was saying about Fitz, ( to paraphrase) "NOTHING will happen in practice that will prevent Fitz from starting opening week". Macc wouldn't guarantee that smith would be on the final roster.

He more then likely will be, but I really feel they would prefer that he wasn't

I hope he does, especially on other rosters. I'd love to land a pick for him.

The Jets finally re-signed quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick earlier this week, leading to questions about fellow signal-caller’s Geno Smith roster status. It turns out that New York does not plan to move on from Smith this summer, general manager Mike Maccagnan said Friday (Twitter link via Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday). Asked if Smith will be on the Jets’ Week 1 roster, Maccagnan stated, “I would assume so. Right now, I know we like Geno Smith… Geno’s in our plans.” In addition to Smith, who has struggled since the Jets chose him in the second round of the 2013 draft, Gang Green has rookie second-rounder Christian Hackenberg and 2015 fourth-rounder Bryce Petty in reserve. With those two around and Smith’s lack of long-term security (he’ll be a free agent after the season), this is likely his final year with the franchise.

Any Report from the media lately has been complete BS. They speculate that Geno will be the permanent back up, but again stressing the fact that no one knows what Mac has planned.

As it was mentioned before but so many are over looking the Fact of the matter that this regime does have confidence in Petty as last year he was backing up Fitz on opening day. While management cut two veterans with TONS of game time experience.

This whole notion of "GENO WILL BE HERE" is utter none-sense. As another poster had stated, "Let it play out". This regime isn't like the previous one, Mac and Bowles will make Geno Smith earn a roster spot, something he has never done in his NFL career.

Problem with that, the reporter uses Mccaggnan's words. There is also a video up on the NYJ website of him being interviewed, where he is not being asked about Geno, but goes out of his way to mention how he is absolutely in the mix.

Geno is in the mix without a doubt. The mix to be in the #2 battle for the season opener.
Geno has to bring his "A" game as does Bryce Petty these next 4-5 weeks inorder to know who will be backing up Ryan.

We all know Geno has been inconsistent. He has to clean that up big time in order to stay on the roster. It is not written in stone that he will be on 53man team if he falters and Bryce steps up.
ditto for Bryce.

IMO, Petty would have to be lights out to hold a roster spot. Anything approaching a 'tie' with Geno and they'll go with the guy that had the experience...
