What do we have in Enumwa?

So what is Enumwa?

6th round pick, practice squad, etc - did others miss him?

But, has shown speed, downfield blocking and has now made some key plays.

Is he a big WR or a fast TE? Maybe we dont need to decide - he's a football player.

What do we think is his upside - what can he be as he learns more (held back by suspension this season)?

He's an H-back. Half WR, half TE.

IMO the jury is still out on Enunwa. Over the last few weeks he has made some big plays. He also has had some big drops. The one against the Pats could have easily cost the Jets the game. He made up for it when Thompkins ran a great "Rub" route, and two of the Pats DB's collided for a 48 yard gain.

Lets see how it all plays out for him. he seems to have some excellent tools

An excellent and up and coming football player. He will learn from Marshall and Decker and be our eventually starter when B. Marsh calls it quits. Until then, he will contribute big time in the 3 or 4 slot. Hell, when he truly is ready and that might be next year, he may become our third WR starter playing the outside with Decker moving into the slot. Imagine that!!!!

Think he's best suited to play right where Gailey has him playing right now. H-Back. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Before he morphs into anything great, he is going to have to stop dropping the football.

Revisiting his draft profile:
6'2" - HEIGHT
32 5/8" - ARM LENGTH
225 LBS. - WEIGHT
9 1/2" - HANDS
4.45 - 40 yd

OVERVIEW:
Prepped in California, where he also competed in the high jump. Saw very limited action in 10 games as a true freshman in 2010 and had one catch for 10 yards and no touchdowns. Started seven of 13 games in 2010, totaling 21 catches for 293 yards (14.0-yard average) and two TDs. Started all 27 games from 2012-13: Produced 42 catches for 470 yards (11.2) and a TD in 2012 (14 games) and 51 catches for 753 yards (14.8) and 12 TDs in 2013 (13 games). Team captain.

ANALYSIS:
STRENGTHS Looks the part with terrific size, long arms and an NFL musculature. Can elevate and snatch throws above his head. Strong after the catch. Sheer size and brawn to block out corners outside. Has hustle traits. Knows where the sticks are and is very football smart. Excellent intangibles -- team captain with a professional approach and leadership traits. Was a 21-year-old senior.

WEAKNESSES Lacks elite top-end speed to separate vertically. Shows some hip tightness. Is not fluid or sudden out of breaks (wastes steps). Not a natural catcher -- lets throws into his body, double catches some and drops catchable throws.

DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 6-7

BOTTOM LINE Big, tough, athletic, West Coast receiver who broke out as a senior. Has a mixture of "Z" and "X" traits and could even be viewed as a developmental H-back prospect.

Wasn't crazy about the Devin Smith pick when they made it, but I'm going to give him a Mulligan on this season with all the time he has missed.

Problem is, as late in the season as it was when he was hurt again, I'm not sure he is going to be in OTA's , mini camp, or summer camp again. If I'm Macc I move on into the off-season as if Smith isn't on the roster, and find another fleet WR. If Smith recovers quicker then expected, and develops into a player, great, we'll have two of them.

4.45 40 and he lacks elite top-end speed? C'mon. For a 6'2" 225 # guy 4.45 is elite speed. Devin smith ran a 4.42 and his main asset is his elite speed.

Kid is playing well recently, and Looks like the stereotypical H-back. Think he has the potential to be a great find in the latter rounds.

As mentioned in the draft profile, he has to stop dropping the ball

I love his size and speed, love his downfield blocking too, but he's not real fluid in his route-running, sometimes he loses his balance (too excited?), and he seems to misjudge the trajectory of passes downfield, and of course he needs a lot of work on his hands. I personally would draft more WR's and move him to H-Back, but if you keep him at WR and he improves on his weaknesses (which is possible), the kid does have a high ceiling at WR, he's a physical mismatch. Anyway, either way I love his size/speed ratio and blocking, the kid has a lot of potential.

completely agree.. if smith misses even more time than this season (OTA's, mini camp ETC) does he get another "mulligan," year two??

i doubt it..

Gailey has been for the last few games lining him up as an H-back on more then half his reps. It has coincided with his improved play. To me, H-back is clearly his prime position. Gailey seems to recognize that, and one of the reasons Cumberland hasn't seen the field in the last few weeks, so i think you are going to get your wish

Hard to say. Don't forget Smith is a 2nd round pick from this regime. I doubt he will be cut if he misses camp again due to injury. My problem with Smith when drafted wasn't injuries. It was the fact that IMO he was a "one trick pony" and he really isn't elite in that trick.

Smith needs to learn to run routes, and certainly needs to be more aggressive going after the football. He needs to be on the field getting reps to improve at those things. If he's not on the field, he won't be in the league long. JMO

i don't see the jets cutting smith year two either, especially since this regime drafted him..

i meant if he misses valuable camp time again, next man up!!

mac can't sit on his hands & just "hope" the kid's a better ballplayer than he showed us year one..

Agree. IMO they gave Smith way to many reps this year based on his draft position rather then on his production. Don't see that happening again

I get all that about Smith, but it would have been interesting to see him running under a couple of the balls Fitz has been laying out there late in the year. A legitimate long ball threat would make this offense almost un-defendable (is that a word?)

Smith ran a 4.42

Enunwa ran a 4.45

What's that about an eighth of an inch?

We can let Smith develop, if he can. How can he develop if he won't be on the field? The timing of this injury is very bad for him
