His draft writeup above was right on. He's an H-back. Develop his hands, he could be a solid find. Marshall's replacement? I don't think so. I think they try to draft Marshall's replacement this or next year.

I'd just let him carry the weight his body is comfortable with, and let him play H-back. Which he's doing now

Would this work alongside Amaro, or would one take time from the other (assuming the guy ever gets back on the field) . . .???

Problem with this might be, it is highly likely Smith will starting the season on 8 game IR with out a camp again, and I'm not sure Amaro won't be traded in the off season. Thompkins, at this point is a complete unknown.

No way I move Enunwa from the H-back spot.

Smith is a paper weight.
Q is a damn Kettle Bell.
That's the difference in a nutshell.

Q will never be an elite X or Z flanker, it's not in his DNA.
But he can become a vexing sort of player the way Hernandez in NE was, before he "vexed" one too many of his old posse.

Quincy Enunwa's winding road to Jets success began in Nigeria

9:44 AM ET
Rich Cimini
ESPN Staff Writer

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Quincy Enunwa began the season with zero NFL catches and no guarantee he'd make the New York Jets' roster. Now he's a virtual starter and has two of the biggest receptions of the season -- a season interrupted by a four-game suspension.

Almost every successful team has an out-of-nowhere player. Enunwa, nicknamed "Q" by his teammates, is that guy. Five things you should know about him:

1. Enunwa (pronounced: uh-NUN-wuh) was born and raised in southern California -- barely. His mother, Ngozi, left Nigeria when she was eight months pregnant, traveling to the United States to rejoin her husband and Quincy's father, Henry, who was attending Kansas Wesleyan University at the time. Prior to the move, Ngozi took courses in politics at a college in Russia. In the U.S., she studied to become a nurse. His father is self-employed. The family settled in Moreno Valley, where Quincy attended private school until the ninth grade and later Rancho Verde High School. He wasn't your typical California teen, though. He wasn't into skateboarding or surfing.

2. He played college ball at Nebraska, where he became a team captain and MVP in 2013. Enunwa played in a run-oriented offense, so his receiving statistics were modest by today's standards, but he's known for the longest reception in school history -- 99 yards. Facing Georgia in the 2014 TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl, he caught a Tommy Armstrong Jr. pass at the 45-yard line and sprinted the last 55 yards. It was his 12th receiving touchdown of the season, breaking the school record held by the legendary Johnny Rodgers. Enunwa played one year at Nebraska with current Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara. They've remained friends and will appear together at an upcoming charity event in Manhattan. "We have that Nigerian connection," Enunwa said.

3. Enunwa is a member of the "Idzik 12," the not-so-flattering nickname given to former general manager John Idzik's final draft class (2014). Only two members of the class have made an impact in the NFL -- first-round pick Calvin Pryor and Enunwa, who was selected in the sixth round. He outlasted the other two receivers in that class, Jalen Saunders and Shaq Evans, both released by the Jets. Enunwa was selected 209th overall. The Jets owned back-to-back picks and they chose IK Enemkpali at No. 210 -- a decision that will live in infamy. Enemkpali punched out Geno Smith in training camp and was immediately released. It hasn't been an easy road for Enunwa, either.

4. One day after being waived at the end of the 2014 preseason, Enunwa was arrested for simple assault, an alleged incident involving his girlfriend in a hotel room near the Jets' facility. The charges were eventually dismissed, but he was disciplined by the NFL. The league, cracking down on domestic violence, handed down a four-game suspension -- Weeks 7 to 10 of the current season. He wasn't allowed to train with the team, so he worked out at a local gym, waiting for another shot. A lot of his career has been spent waiting. Enunwa was on the practice squad in 2014, but he learned a lot. As a member of the scout team, his job was to impersonate opponents' receivers. So he studied the likes of Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas and Brandon Marshall (now a teammate), expanding his knowledge of his craft. It's paying off now.

5. Rookie Devin Smith was projected as the No. 3 receiver at the start of training camp, but he got hurt and missed the preseason. It created an opportunity for Enunwa, who leap-frogged popular veteran Jeremy Kerley on the depth chart. The decision raised eyebrows, but offensive coordinator Chan Gailey was intrigued by Enunwa's size (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) and blocking ability. He saw Enunwa as a big receiver who could handle some of the tight end's blocking responsibilities, setting up potential matchup advantages in the passing game. He had a couple of early drops, but Enunwa has delivered in the past two victories. He made a critical 3rd-and-14 reception to help beat the Cowboys and his 48-yard catch against the Patriots last week set up the game-winning touchdown in overtime. Enunwa and fellow wideout Kenbrell Thompkins have emerged as valuable role players.

"You need to write more about those guys," Marshall said. "Those guys have really helped us out."

At least this season he's a jack of all trades, master of none. Instrumental for this offense this season. Like someone else already posted, he's definitely a football player. The guy still has a major case of the dropsies, but he is getting better and bailed himself out in OT against the Patsies.

No way Big mac gives up on smith this early remember mac was a scout for over 15 yrs so he knows players and he knows about developing a player I fully expect to see smith given more chances and can turn into a desean jackson type if he adds muscle and learns to catch the ball. Also needs to work on his route running he will never be as good as i think the big issue for him is he plays faster in the game than his numbers project which makes it easy for him to get knocked off his routes and off balance.........The other issue it presents is he usually arrives at his route much faster than fitz expected which in turn makes him waiting on the ball and the DB's catching up.

Enunwa reminds me of a faster, quicker Jerricho Cotchery...

More snaps he gets the more productive he will become...

As for Devin Smith, depending on how long his recovery is will he be able to develop his lacking skill sets... Doubt he will be ready for the off season and for the second straight year he will miss what is needed this day n age for young talents to develop... He like a couple others could start the year on the PUP list, which for a youngin like himself is not good for growth...

Devin Smith's main problem is his confidence, since being drafted he has improved his route running ten fold... His ball skills during practice are far superior then what we have witnessed in game situations... Unfortunately for this particular system he is a lost cog, he would benefit from more crossing and flat routes where he can catch n run, but Gailey isn't known for these routes unless it is a running back coming out of the backfield after pass blocking...

One would think, going to his college comfort of going deep will build his confidence but the talent he faced in college are far inferior to these defensive backs we face every week... I feel bad for the kid, but it is what it is... No they won't give up on him this early but he needs to get back and work otherwise by the time he comes back he might not have a role to earn with the likes of Kenbrell Thompkins, Joe Anderson and probably the 2016 draft prospect we select...

Enunwa, is in another class... The Jets tried to acquire Tim Wright (H Back) similar size and strength of Enunwa and wouldn't shock me if Wes Saxton also becomes similar to Q. in that H Back department next season, begs the question what to do with Jace Amaro, Jeff Cumberland and blocking end Kellen Davis?

A lot of questions, a lot of what ifs... Will be an interesting off season that is for sure...

Good post.

The big difference be Cotch and Q is that Cotch was sure handed. always can count on him to make the clutch grab

Don't think it's a case of giving up on Smith, it's a matter of him not being able to be on the field. In order to improve he needs to be getting reps. For the second straight year in a row he won't be getting any when the coaches are teaching, which is in OTA's and camp. IMO they will seek another fast WR in the draft if one is available.

IMO Cumberland is gone next year. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Jets try to move Amaro. A TE I'd watch in camp next year is Zack Sudfeld. he was having a nice camp this year when he was hurt. Unlike Amaro, he has been with the Jets, rehabbing, and working in the film room, almost every day since he has been injured.

but we seen lately that Q is building that confidence from jump street Cotchery wasn't that sure handed receiver, he grew into that role with more live game reps and feel Q has the same potential... Cotchery was a fearless run blocker and probably could of handled an H Back role, we know Q has that ability as he has shown all year long... Key moments he has been 50/50 but the potential is there...

D smith has shown a lack of a killer instinct, both to me, and via stories from the team. I don't take rookie seasons seriously, these are not men, they are kids that run fast, just became celebrities, and have a lot to absorb. If we get production in year one is gravy in my mind. He will have every chance to better himself, but right now he's a practice squad guy.

Q, I'm happy with his emergence, as we all are. Right now he makes clutch catches when the d forgets he's there or focuses on decker, Marshall. I would hope that he just makes steady progress as he and Gailey figure out his fit in the offense. We look good in the present and the future book.

Why trade a 2nd round pick when he has "Zero" trade value? Cut Cumberland and save $2 mil, develop Amaro, keep Enunwa at the H-Back.
Amaro has got to realize that he's a FA after 2017.... 2 seasons to prove he's worth something.
If a guy 6'5"/ 265 lbs with 34" arms who put up 225lbs. /28 times can't learn to block then he is a waste!!

I have no idea what Amaro's trade value will be in the off-season, but I strongly suspect there is something seriously wrong between Amaro and Bowles. During OTA's and mini camp, he practiced on the 2nd practice field where the bubble players and scrubs were practicing.

Cimini reported afew weeks ago that Amaro has not been in the building since his injury. This is very unusual. Sudfield has been in the building almost every day.

From Rotoworld:

(Seemed to start out the year well enough)
Jace Amaro - TE - Jets
A potential spread offense is expected to benefit Jets TE Jace Amaro.
New offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is an expert at getting his playmakers in space via spread formations. So it's a no-brainer to expect Amaro to take a leap forward in this scheme. He's essentially an oversized possession wideout at 6'5/265 and Gailey will be desperate for difference-makers -- especially if Percy Harvin is cut loose. Amaro is firmly on the TE2 radar heading into his second NFL season.
Source: ESPN.com

Jace Amaro - TE - Jets
Jace Amaro dropped six passes on 52 targets last year, the second-highest percentage in the NFL.
Only Lamar Miller had a worse drop rate. Amaro's head was spinning as he went from Texas Tech's spread offense to Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast system and he finished with just 38-345-2. Now he has to learn another system, but Chan Gailey's spread scheme fits Amaro's skill set much better. As the clear-cut starter and a playmaker who needs to be detached from the line, there's TE2 appeal here. A higher comfort level should result in fewer drops for Amaro.
Source: ESPN.com

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini believes second-year TE Jace Amaro "could make a nice leap forward" in new OC Chan Gailey's offense.
Cimini confirms Gailey is going to run spread, and Amaro played in a spread at Texas Tech before struggling in Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast offense last year. We don't anticipate Amaro jumping into the top-ten fantasy tight ends as a sophomore, but he certainly could become a viable matchup-based streamer. Amaro is 6-foot-5, 265. He ran 4.6-flat at his pre-draft Pro Day.
Source: ESPN.com

(Then when mini camp started, and the CS actually got to see him, things seemed to go downhill)

Jace Amaro - TE - Jets
ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini does not see second-year TE Jace Amaro as a "60-catch tight end."
Cimini has been underwhelmed by Amaro at practice, saying he needs to cut down on his drops and play with more urgency. Cimini said in May he thought Amaro "could make a nice leap forward" in his second season, but minicamp must have changed his mind. Amaro turned 38 receptions into 345 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie year.
Source: ESPN.com

Jace Amaro - TE - Jets
The Jets will use second-year TE Jace Amaro as an H-back.
Jeff Cumberland projects to fill in as the traditional inline tight end. Amaro has the athleticism to move around the formation and make plays with the ball in his hands. But he'll need to show in camp that he's corrected his drops issue that plagued him as a rookie. If so, Amaro has a chance to catch 50-60 passes in OC Chan Gailey's spread. Amaro hurt his back at OTAs and missed minicamp.
Source: New York Post

Jace Amaro - TE - Jets
Jace Amaro is listed as the Jets' third-team tight end on their initial training camp depth chart.
He's behind starter Jeff Cumberland and blocking specialist Kellen Davis. Amaro wasn't impressive in the spring, according to onlookers, and we haven't read anything noteworthy about him since camp opened. It's not a good start to Amaro's sophomore campaign, but he has plenty of time to climb the ranks. Cumberland and Davis don't have the pass-catching upside of Amaro.

Jace Amaro - TE - Jets
ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini said second-year tight end Jace Amaro is "on the hot seat."
Cimini added that Amaro has "a lot to prove after a so-so rookie season." Unfortunately there isn't much Amaro can do to improve his stock while he's out with a sprained shoulder. Red flags were raised a few weeks ago when Amaro was listed as the third-string tight end on the Jets' preseason depth chart.
Source: ESPN New York

Jace Amaro - TE - Jets
Jets TE Jace Amaro's recovery from a sprained shoulder is going slower than expected.
"Every day it’s been getting better. It’s just a really slow process," said Amaro. "It’s just frustrating. I just want to get out there and be able to play." Originally expected back for the regular season opener, it now appears Amaro could miss regular season games.
Source: New York Post

To my knowledge Amaro's injury was not severe enough to require surgery. It is very odd he was given a full season IR if they had hope he would contribute this year. it is odder still that as exciting as this season has been, and as tight as this team seems to be the guy hasn't shown up in the building..........At all. While other IR'ed players are He's learning a new position, H-back . you would think he would be in to watch film at least, to talk to the TE's coach to help learnhis new position.

have a feeling he is going to fall in the Geno Smith category. Player with some natural talent, who won't be back if some one offers anything.

Time will tell

Jace Amaro right now has a value of a 3rd round pick trade value, just because he is a pass catching tight end (SE) which a lot of teams are looking for...

Teams like Dallas, Houston are two home town teams that I wouldn't put it passed for them to make this deal... Witten isn't getting any younger and the Texans really don't have a number one on their depth chart...

There are plenty other teams that could be interested like San Diego, New Orleans and/or Green Bay could all be options not to mention Miami or Buffalo also could be in play just saying...

Since Amaro's injury is NOT lower body injury the Jets could get two picks: Based on the team in question perusing Amaro bottom half teams 3rd or teams in the top end of value could be a 4th this year and conditional pick in 2017 on playing time/performance based...

as for the return of Jeff Cumberland start saying your goodbyes now because he won't be back...

Kellen Davis has a better shot to return if the team chooses to move on from Tommy Bohanon, even tho T-Bo has been a welcomed addition to special teams...
