Look, I understand that its not a perfect fit and it seems like overkill on the D-line, but we were picking 6th in this draft, not 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th, and we had no control over what the first five teams did. He we wanted to pick higher, it might have been a good idea to lose down the stretch and not win for a coach who was a dead man walking.
But alas we were picking 6th and the consensus "best player in the draft" magically slid to us in that spot, and we have a GM who made his philosophy crystal clear prior to the draft, he believes that you use FA to fill needs, and the draft to add the best talent. Guess what, there are GM's in Canton who believed the exact same thing.
Now I can see killing the guy if he reached for some idiot who had no business being selected 6th Overall, but to kill the guy for taking the player everyone in his mother was calling the best player in the draft prior to tonight, at 6th overall, really, thats a pick that deserves to get killed?
C'mon people, a little perspective here, and lets see how Bowles plans on utilizing his talent before we insist that it just can't work. I guarantee you Mac and Bowles had this conversation prior to the draft, what to do if Williams were to fall to them at 6, there are not many possibilities to cover when you are picking that high and I'll guarantee you this one was discussed and looked at from every conceivable angle, and these guys determined that if Williams fell they could take him and make it all work, there's no way Bowles didn't give this pick his approval, he's a defensive coach and he feels like he can make all of these pieces work, now lets see what he has in mind before we call it a failure.
You now there are worst problems to have than too many dominant defensive lineman.
Some teams would kill to have that problem, if you can call it a problem.
