Well, reading between the lines of what Mac said yesterday, he seemed to say he's not counting on Milliner and that having him in the mix would be more of a pleasant surprise and give them a surplus. That seems to be your stance also, Milliner isn't penciled in anywhere because they don't know what to expect from him. Have to think McDougle is in the same boat since milliner has shown much more than he has. Seems the Jets are approaching the position like anything they get out of McDougle and Milliner is gravy...which is kind of your stance.

And you're right, we wont be on the same page because even your response contradicts itself. "Did you mention the 2nd vet would start. No. Did I state the vet would mentor the young CBs? No." Even your own response points out we dont need a 2nd vet CB but you want one but you also want more playing time for the young CBs. Its not me mad, its you contradicting yourself.

I could ask what you mean, but every time you explain you contradict yourself, so no need to explain further. If it makes sense in your head, that's fine. I just dont think Cromartie signs here to maybe play and maybe mentor young players, maybe not play, maybe sit behind a young player, maybe ride into retirement coming off a pro bowl season on the jets bench behind McDougle/Milliner/Williams.

If you sign jackson and cromartie, no young players are playing...jackson and Cro are playing...so you cant sign both and also play/develop McDougle, Williams, Milliner, and Walls...Sorry if that doesnt make sense to me...arguing both sides doesnt make sense...only 2 maybe 3-4 CBs on the field at a time...

Cheers.

Sorry you can't follow.

Shane Vereen - RB - Patriots
A source tells the Boston Herald that free agent RB Shane Vereen is hoping to land $5M per season on his next contract.
It's wishful thinking from Vereen, who is obviously looking to go high in negotiations. The bigger takeaway is that he fully plans to hit the open market and not re-sign with the Patriots before March 10. Vereen, a fine passing back, should be aiming for something around the three-year, $10.5M deal Darren Sproles got from the Eagles.

Listen, just because you say I'm contradictory doesn't mean I am. I asked you to point out what was but all you do is repeat yourself with no follow-up. Very nice. Just because you don't seem to follow doesn't mean you simply label someone as if you are name-calling. If you don't follow what I'm saying, just ask. Very nasty tone. All because I don't agree with you? Amazing.

Mods? Is this the product you want here? It's hardly an arena for free exchange.

Byron Maxwell - DB - Seahawks
Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo is hearing the Falcons could be a player for Byron Maxwell in free agency.
It makes sense given his connection to new head coach Dan Quinn, Seattle's former defensive coordinator. Seahawks GM John Schneider acknowledged the team wants to keep Maxwell but that he may be out of Seattle's price range. There will be a robust market for Maxwell, our No. 1 corner available in free agency.

It's not that serious.

Jason Pierre-Paul - DL - Giants
Coach Tom Coughlin stated at the NFL Combine that the Giants are "convinced" they want to re-sign free agent RE Jason Pierre-Paul.
Once an annual team strength for the Giants, defensive end has grown thin with Mathias Kiwanuka's future uncertain and Robert Ayers coming off a serious pectoral injury. Pierre-Paul has been inconsistent, but he is only 26 years old and registered 12.5 sacks last season. The G-Men need to keep him, even if it entails slapping Pierre-Paul with the franchise tag.

Ted Thompson: We’re trying to keep Randall Cobb

Packers General Manager Ted Thompson took his turn in front of the media at the combine on Thursday and wide receiver Randall Cobb was a big topic of conversation.

Cobb’s set to become a free agent next month and recent reports have indicated that Cobb is looking for a long-term deal in the neighborhood of the four-year, $39 million contract that wideout Jordy Nelson signed before last season. Thompson didn’t delve into numbers, but did say that the team likes to hold onto good players that they develop and that they’d like to continue that habit with Cobb.

“We’re working on several different levels with several different people,” Thompson said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Like I say, it’s no secret. We say the same thing every year, we mean it. It’s not a secret that we try to keep and maintain our own guys as much as possible. We feel like that’s a good investment for the organization. We feel like, especially, if we have good people like we do, we’d like to do that. We’re trying to do that with Randall.”

Thompson wouldn’t say whether the franchise tag was a possibility and said there are “a lot of dynamics” to any contract negotiation. In Cobb’s case, Nelson’s contract and Cobb turning in his best season while staying healthy for the team’s entire run are among those dynamics in a negotiation that may go down to the wire if the tag isn’t put into play.

Demaryius Thomas - WR - Broncos
The Broncos will use the franchise tag on free agent Demaryius Thomas if they cannot come to a long-term agreement.
Teams have until March 2 to apply the tag. That leaves 10 days to work out a long-term contract. It's extremely unlikely to happen, leaving the tag as Thomas' most likely fate. The sides would then have until mid-July to hammer out a multi-year deal. The tag for receivers costs roughly $12.7 million.

OK Packers, tag Cobb so we can snag Bulaga RT / RG.

Bills working overtime to keep Jerry Hughes off the market

The Bills might not have a quarterback, but they’re working hard to keep the part of the team they can count on.

According to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News, the Bills have had several meetings with the agent for Jerry Hughes at the NFL Scouting Combine, with more scheduled this weekend.

While there’s no sign that a long-term deal for the free agent defensive end is close, the fact they’re making such a push here makes their intentions clear.

The Bills don’t want to have to franchise Hughes (not at around $14 million), and it’s clear there will be a market for him with so few young, productive pass-rushers without rap sheets on the market.

“We’re trying to avoid that [the tag], because we’re trying to get him long term for sure and keep everybody on the same page so Hughes and his representative felt like, ‘Hey, we got a good deal,’ and we say, as the Buffalo Bills, we got a good deal,” Whaley said.

Of course, Hughes would have to switch positions, and play outside linebacker in coach Rex Ryan’s 3-4 system. But he’s had 10.0 sacks each of the last two seasons, after just 5.0 in his first three years with the Colts.

Ron Parker - DB - Chiefs
Free agent S Ron Parker's initial asking price is roughly $6 million per year.
Parker and his representatives have been in contact with the Chiefs and it sounds like the two sides are working on a deal. Of course, Kansas City's finances are tied directly to Justin Houston, who is in for a huge payday after leading the league in sacks in 2014. Once Houston is squared away, the rest of Kansas City's offseason dominoes will fall into place. Regardless, $6M/year for Parker -- our No. 13 free agent safety available -- isn't happening.

Torrey Smith - WR - Ravens
SI's Peter King believes free agent Torrey Smith's best contract offer won't come from Baltimore.
It's speculation on King's part, but probably rooted in truth. Coming off an 11-touchdown season, Smith didn't do anything to hurt his market value despite frustrating fantasy owners. At 26, the elite deep threat is just now entering his prime. Once Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant are assigned franchise tags, Smith could emerge as one of this year's premium free agents.

Ryan Mallett - QB - Texans
Texans coach Bill O'Brien confirmed his top priority at quarterback is re-signing free agent Ryan Mallett.
Mallett started just two games for Houston before suffering a season-ending pectoral injury in 2014. Seven career games isn't much of a sample size, but O'Brien insists Mallett is "a hard worker, and he understands our system." Houston's current in-house options at QB include journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage, a fourth-round pick in the 2014 draft.

Byron Maxwell - DB - Seahawks
Draft insider Tony Pauline hears free agent CB Byron Maxwell is looking for $10 million annually.
Per Overthecap.com, that would make Maxwell the sixth-highest paid corner in the NFL. With Russell Wilson up for a big extension, the Seahawks are going to be penny-pinching this offseason. If Maxwell is the free-wielding capitalist most players understandably are, it's likely he's played his final game with Seattle.

Justin Forsett - RB - Ravens
A source tells ESPN that the Falcons will have "strong interest" in free agent RB Justin Forsett.
Forsett is coming off a career-year in a Gary Kubiak offense that has the same principles as the one Kyle Shanahan is installing in Atlanta. He also won't be overly expensive considering he turns 30 years old in October. The Falcons likely have interest in Forsett as a tandem piece with Devonta Freeman, who they've talked up relentlessly this week. Forsett is our No. 5 free agent RB, behind DeMarco Murray, C.J. Spiller, Ryan Mathews and Mark Ingram.

Buster Skrine - DB - Browns
Free agent CB Buster Skrine is believed to be seeking $6.5 million per year.
It would presumably be a tough price for the Browns to pay after they made Joe Haden a $12-plus million-per-year player last offseason. Skrine's asking price may be a bit aggressive, but we don't doubt he'll get paid as a versatile corner who can play man coverage. Skrine doesn't turn 26 until April.

Frank Gore - RB - 49ers
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports says free agent Frank Gore is looking to be paid $4 million per year.
The Niners like what they see from Carlos Hyde but it's going to be hard for them to pass on Gore, a franchise cornerstone and one of the league's most consistent rushers. Even with Hyde breathing down his neck, the 31-year-old still managed 1,106 yards and four touchdowns in 2014. La Canfora believes the 49ers are the only team willing to pay Gore his desired $4 million salary.

Byron Maxwell - DB - Seahawks
According to NFL draft insider Tony Pauline, "present word" at the NFL Combine has the Eagles as the favorites to sign free agent CB Byron Maxwell.
Pauline is a draft analyst, but he's also one of the top information men in the business, particularly this time of year. Philadelphia makes a ton of sense as a landing spot for Maxwell. The Eagles prioritize big, physical press corners, and Maxwell fits the bill at 6-foot-1, 207 with long arms and plus speed. He would be a huge upgrade on free agent LCB Bradley Fletcher.

Bill O’Brien wants Ryan Mallett back in Houston

Posted by Josh Alper on February 20, 2015, 1:41 PM EST
Ryan Mallett
AP
Texans coach Bill O’Brien has suggested that the team will have a competition to determine their starting quarterback for the 2015 season and he knows one player that he’d like to have as an aspirant in that competition.

The Texans traded for Ryan Mallett before the start of last season and turned to him for two starts before a torn pectoral forced a move to injured reserve that brought his season to an end. Mallett is set to become a free agent next month and O’Brien said in Indianapolis this week that he’d like to re-sign a player he also coached with the Patriots.

“He’s smart, and he’s a hard worker, and he understands our system,” O’Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle. “I like the fact that when he wasn’t playing he was really into the game. He listened to every play call on an earpiece. There are a lot of things that make me believe he can be a starter in this league.”

Returning to Houston probably makes the most sense for Mallett if he wants a starting job since he knows the Texans Offense and has worked with O’Brien and quarterbacks coach George Godsey since entering the league. That points to a return in 2015, although the other names in the hat aren’t quite as easily sussed out at this point in the offseason.

Derrick Morgan - LB - Titans
The Titans have reportedly made re-signing free agent OLB Derrick Morgan a "priority."
It would be a rare smart move by the Titans, who need to keep their good young players. (They don't have many.) Morgan isn't a difference-making pass rusher, but he's a good one, and plays solid run defense. He also just turned 26 years old. 2015 would be Morgan's second year in the Titans' 3-4 scheme.
