Fitzpatrick Thread -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets agree to 1-year, $12M deal

Win win for MM and Jets. Jets get a one year bridge to one of the young guys and some goodwill in the locker room. [NFLV]Most importantly, no long term committment to a guy who may be just a one year wonder. I think this speaks volumes about how they feel about Fitz.[/NFLV]

Plus $3MM in incentives.

To some degree, Fitz wins in that the Jets moved off their position against a one-year deal.

So... What happens now!

4 QBs? Smith the odd man out?

Great news!!

Even better news is that I think we found our GM. He has won every battle so far. Played his cards right in the Mo situation and in this situation. It seems like the media has been grasping at straws every damn time with the "far apart" comments. That same comment was made earlier today. Glad they were wrong.

I'm not sure I would count this as a win for Maccagnan. The previous deals have been.

But this one? The Jets did not want to give Fitz a one-year deal at $12MM, though Fitz said he would be willing to accept that deal. Fitz held to his position, Jets moved to him.

Manish had a big hissy fit in today's column about how Maccagnan was being "exposed" for his immaturity as a GM. Yet another case of overreaction and poor journalism among our beat writers. Now Mehta can take a deep breath, relax, and ST*U.

Glad we got Fitz back. My kid's been riding me about buying him one of those Fitzmagic tee shirts.

Could be. They might be blowing smoke regarding their feelings about him.

But right now, Geno Smith is a better option than Bryce Petty. For the short term anyway. It'll be an interesting cut, if they do go with three.

Sack, I apologize and you are absolutely right. I was thinking the roles were reversed. In either case, glad this ordeal is behind the team. Not sure why the team did not want to give him a one year deal. It's a prove it deal. Next year we have more money so if he plays well, we actually can afford him. If not, we can move on.

Maybe they'll try to stash Petty on the practice squad but I can't imagine he's not signed to be someone's third string.

I'm okay with this move. If we had the cap space for it, I'm fine with it, the main thing for me was I didn't want to commit to Fitzpatrick beyond this year and block the young guns.

This, IMO, is ideal, it buys us another year to groom Hack and Petty, then there is nothing blocking them in 2017.

As for the 3 Million in incentives, if he earns that money that means he's repeating his career year from last year and we're winning games, so I have no problem with it. As I said, the main thing for me was length, I did not want to be committed to Fitz beyond this year, so I'm happy. This was the ideal situation from my POV.

Team was against a one year because they wanted to spread out the cap hit and avoid doing this all over again next year. They were speaking out of both sides of their mouths.

It seems mac has every confidence petty will be starting next year.

I thought the only reason they did not want to sign Fitz for $12M this year was due to their cap space?

I'm fine with the deal. Glad we have him, it sounds like all the players were desperate to get him back so this will go a long way in the locker room. The only downside I see, is that now we're likely going to carry four QB's on the roster which means we're skimping somewhere else.

Part of me also wishes we could see Geno play with the better talent.

In Mac we trust!

While people were giving up on Fitz he just made an extra 4 million and didn't miss any time. And has incentives up to 15 mill.

It's 7/27/16,

The team hasnt even started training camp on the field yet. Before we sign off that we will be carrying 4 QB's, lets see how Petty does against Geno Smith. Very hard to sell that we go with 4 signal callers.

My gut feeling, the organization is pulling to see their guy trump Geno. Who by the way is on his last year of his rookie contract.

IMO it will depend on Petty's performance in TC. I'm sure Macc would like to release smith, but he needs a back up, and smith is cheap
