Fitzpatrick Thread -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets agree to 1-year, $12M deal

I am in the camp "now" where I have moved on. While I am not looking forward to Geno starting by any stretch of the imagination, I am looking - hoping - that at least Petty shows that he belongs and at some point in the season supplants Geno...

As the posted said, move on and sign Mo long term...

I think it's a foregone conclusion that Fitz is returning, but if he hypothetically doesn't my one hope for Geno is that he can become "Sanchized" -- put a good enough team around him to overcome his flaws.

Maybe it's selective memory, but I don't feel Geno was put in that position his first few years -- the talent on those teams required him to "do more" (at least in his mind) and that obviously didn't end well (see rushing 467 times in Miami game). But Gailey seems to know how to put his QBs in a position to succeed (the only reason Fitz did so well) so hopefully he can do the same with Geno if necessary.

Of course if Geno actually takes "the next step" and shows the improvement we keep hearing about this becomes a TOTALLY different discussion. But for now I'm resigned to hoping he's not horrible and seeing where things go from there . . .

It's funny to me how I read all this Geno bashing from fans, and then you read players comments from star players like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker saying nothing but positive things about Geno's potential. Just today, Marshall said Geno looks like a new guy. Gailey has repeated several times that he sees Geno growing.

But that won't change the minds of the "minds made up" fanbase. Geno sucks and I don't wanna hear ANYTHING ELSE!!! And the explanation given is that this is all a smokescreen by players and coaches who are just trying their hardest not to reveal some supposed truth.

Before I get sandblasted as a Geno fanboy, lover, or other juvenile taunt, I also reiterate that I fully support the return of Fitzpatrick as our starter (over Geno) at the right price. I believe it will happen. And I also believe that our QB situation will be fine with Geno as a backup. Carry four QB's. What the hell? Why do we have to do what Cimini and Mehta tell us we should do?

Maybe he is improving; Maybe he isn't but what are they suppose to say.... I take all these reports with a grain of salt... year 2 of Geno we heard all this stuff too... Years 2,3,4 of Sanchez we heard it too..... at this point I don't care what is said in or to the press... I want to see it n the field in the reg season... With that said I want Fitz back.

The difference in Sanchez years and first two of Geno's career was that Rex was the mouthpiece, and to him every Jet was great. I feel Bowles is different and lend a little more credence to his comments.

Geno never had a chance. Never had a good WR, but would have a great WR group. I don't really care to see Geno, but its better than overpaying Fitz IMO.

No, neither of us need anyone to tell us how to formulate our opinions. But when some of us here presume our opinions to be greater than those who are actually making the decisions, when they have much greater access to scouting, film, resources, experience, etc., it does seem a bit flawed.

I agree completely; fans need to put the beer down and have an open mind .

6 mil Fitz, take it or go! lol Lets give Geno-Petty a shot. Besides I want to see if Geno after all these years learned not to Telegraph & stare at the 1 & only WR he is throwing to. Also if he still counts his steps from under Center..3-5-7 step throw. Petty is the one I'm interested in seeing & Hackenberg...I think is comical. Could nthandle College Defenses Blitzing & will be worse in Pro's. He has BUST written all over him. But hey, who ever starts at QB for my JETS I'll be pulling for his best to win us a Super Bowl.

bowles said he didn't believe decker, marshall & mangold's absence from the first two OTAs had anything to do with fitzpatrick.. i think that's laughable BTW, but if i/we were to take him at "face value" we would essentially be forced to believe he meant what he said.. period..

Well, considering Nick Mangold's wife just had a child, I will take his word for it regarding him.

I'm not sure what you expect them to say "he sucks and we want him off the roster??". He is still their teammate as well as Gailey's responsibility. Everything they say publicly has to be in support of their teammates and God forbid they have to try to keep his value up just in case some idiot GM is willing to trade for him.

Chasing Fitz to no end (we are bidding against ourselves) as well as boycotting OTA's in support of him tells the whole story of what everyone thinks of Geno. If he was so great they would have told Fitz to kick rocks a long time ago.

Players don't say bad things about their teammates, typically, and neither do coaches say bad things about their players. If you really think about what they're saying, it isn't all that complimentary. Positive comments about a player's potential are akin to comments saying that the player has yet to reach his potential, i.e. he has played poorly. Saying he looks like a new guy, similarly, is the same as saying "the guy he has been in the past isn't good enough, or even at all" (if it is a compliment to say you're a whole new guy, then it must mean that the guy you were before wasn't good) and "seeing growth" is the same thing. All of the comments are damning him with faint praise. Players who play well have people say things about him like "he's great," or "he's an excellent player" or whatever. In the end, all the comments basically boil down to "he has to improve" which I think everyone agrees with, and "he is improving," which is more controversial. They'll never take the step of saying that they don't believe he can improve, even if they believed that. His teammates will say he's showing signs of improvement until the day he's out of the league (or improves enough to receive the "he's a good player" comments instead). I don't think there's any requirement to consider these types of comments when evaluating players, personally, because the statements are boilerplate, essentially. You could dig up a million quotes like this for all sorts of athletes who couldn't succeed at the highest level.

Well said!! No one said they want him behind center, they just say "he has improved"

yeah, i did hear about mangold's baby.. any thoughts on what mangold would have done if the birth of his child didn't come into play??

we probably will never find out if he was also in on the mini boycott though..

But again, here we go again assuming that the players hate Geno. This is nothing but fan speculation. If I'm Brandon Marshall, and I really dislike Geno Smith, I'm not commenting at all. It's the official "no comment". Marshall, Decker, and Gailey have all said very positive things about Geno over the last few weeks, but I guess that's just a coincidence? It's all just a big smokescreen? Apparently, it doesn't mean anything when it contradicts the views of those trying to prove some point here.

I'm supposed to see some hidden message in what these players and coaches are saying. I'm not allowed to take them for their word. I'm supposed to read between the lines and go along with this "banish Geno to the gates of hell" narrative that his detractors demand.

Sorry, but I'm not buying this line of reasoning.
