I'm agreeing with you.absolutely understood.. but who's got 12 million in their back pocket (or is willing to free up that kind of money just before training camps open) just in case their starter goes down??

Correct me, but if their starter was injured for the year, his salary wouldn't go against the cap. So say a team has 4 million in room and a20 mill qb went down on Ir, they would have 24 mill in cap room.Fair question. I'm not sure if a team is out there, but it would have to be a contender with a decent starting QB, and a decent amount of cap room. I'm not sure if there are many teams that fit that bill, but I would prefer not finding out.

Mike Francesa was saying today, that he believes the deal gets done and the pressure for both sides was always training camp.
His info on the negotiation was that Fitz was happy with the first year, and the second year salary was the sticking point. 15 is guaranteed between year one and two. The deal included makeable first year incentives that would increase to a potential 15 million year 1 salary, if he had similar numbers to last year.
If year 2 is the only hold up, I think this deal gets done.

sounds to easy.. if the jets could sign fitzpatrick to say, the veteran league minimum for 2 years with a 20 million signing bonus, wouldn't we see deals like this on every roster in the NFL??How about a 2 year/$20M contract that is fully guaranteed?? Won't get that anywhere else. Nobody is guaranteeing money for Ryan Fitzpatrick.

or are you saying no bonus, just 10 million per year over a two year span, all guaranteed??

It was a 6 million per year, 3 year deal, with a6 mill signing bonus over 3 years.I thought it was the prorated 3 year deal that was the problem. The contract was for 24 million for three years making his number 8 per year. Fitz (i thought) was happy with the guaranteed 12 million year one, but not with 6 for each of the next two.
Or if the injury was before week 1 and they put the qb on the exempt list. I think.no, that's wrong. the injured player would still count against the cap (unless the team cuts the player before the season started)
I find it hard to believe this is anything beyond posturing. The Jets by far have offered him the most cash. Camp hasn't started and the second year of the deal is the hanger.Maybe Fitz knows something we don't

The rumor is Fitz and the Jets haven't spoke in 6 weeks. The rumor was also that mo and the Jets weren't speaking...
With 15 mill guaranteed, is Fitz retiring?not likely.

I think the Jets are clearly the best offer, so it's not logical that he's using the threat of another team against the Jets. Also is Fitz going to take considerably less to be a backup just to spite the Jets.

I believe that was his point.Spite is not as common as fans might think. I don't see too many cases of players taking less money just to spite a team because of negotiations.
I believe that was his point.
We are no more than a couple folks at a murder mystery, trying to figure everything out.
I don't feel this is a big issue, but could the Jets have offended Fitz? They have named him the starter but have offered big backup money, and by cutting his pay in half year 2, they have basically say you're our best option this year, but we hope you're gone next year.
