i'm quite pessimistic on geno, but i don't necessarily agree with you here. i think this shows it is geno's last chance. put up this year or hit the road jack. petty is a long-term project and provides great hope for the future. but i don't think a 4th round project QB signals they are done with geno.

last chance for mary jane

As much as some fans want to see Geno go away, I don't see it. He's getting one more chance to prove himself.

GM's give QB's more time than fans. If Fitz shines in training camp, and beats out Geno, that's the only scenario where Geno will be on his way out.

I'am sure he will get his chance to prove himself, but by "Chance" i think its what he can do in training camp and pre season games. If he loses out to Fitz, he then may face the possibilty on where his fate lies with how Simms and Petty played.

This competition will be a fair one. No favoritism by no stretch.

Well, Winston was on the FSU baseball team and as Phil Simms put so well, was born to throw something.

I would agree he's the second Best thrower of the football in the draft.
Winston has a long delivery, you can see his baseball background, traces of a pitchers delivery, and I wouldn't say he has a cannon either. Maybe its because of his mechanics, but I'm not overly impressed with his velocity. I agree with Mayock, Petty is a better pure thrower of the football.

On ESPN 3 months ago they asked him (2:45 of the video) "At what point during the draft if it gets too long do you say 'i should have gone earlier than expectd'".

His answer:

"It doesnt matter when i get drafted, all it matters is what i do when i get there"

I'm pumped about Petty. I live in Dallas and saw a few of his games on TV. The guy has an incredible arm. The Cowboys wanted Petty bad to take over for Romo in a couple of years. I say let him sit this year and then maybe start next year if ready. He will learn a lot from Fitz.

Watched this team for 45 years, long before this staff and long after
He's proved his chance to me

I couldnt agree more. A QB that was selected by the old regime who has shown absolutley nothing in two years, unless he played a meaningless game.
Todd Bowles wants to win and knows Geno is only as good as a back up. This is why Fitz was brought in. To groom a Jets draft pick selected by Mac and Bowles.

Just remembered that Pennington was a 24 year old rookie too. He sat 2+ years.

+1

The way how some talk about Petty's age it's like he's some Chris Weinkie or Weeden. No where close. The Guy is very young to grow and become something special.

With this pick, Maccagnan was just acknowledging the elephant in the room. Bowles doubts Geno has what it takes to get the Jets to the playoffs. They traded for Fitz because they needed a crafty veteran to challenge Geno. They know Geno is going to fail horribly, so they got that hold-the-fort guy in Fitzpatrick that I am sure the CS believes will win the QB competition.

Bryce Petty was a guy I wanted all along. I really didn't think the Jets had any realistic shot at getting Mariota. Petty, to me, seemed like the best QB of the rest in the draft.

All for throwing him into the QB competition in August. He ought to learn a lot and assuming everything goes well? He could get on the field late in the season and I would love that.

Jets fan needed something to look forward to and everyone knows how things will end with Fitz and Geno - NO playoffs. Like I have posted before, I do not believe this team could ever be any better than 7-9 with Fitz or Geno leading the way. Playoffs are just a sh*tty old pipe dream.

Bryce Petty in the 4th round is outstanding value and he has a chance at being great. I don't believe this is just another guy the Jets will cut after training camp like they did with Taj Boyd last training camp.

Maine with the defense alone we have 2-3 extra wins i could see fitzpatrick guiding us to 10-6

Didnt RG3 play in the same offense as Petty. He had a good year his first year so don't be surprised if he impresses. He has the heart.

Couldn't be happier... let Fitz and Gailey train the kid and let him sit for the year and learn.

Bowles is already stating Petty will sit and learn. The right call

Makes sense

You've got Fitzpatrick starting and Petty will learn a great deal quickly about mistake free quarterback play by watching and practicing with such a veteran
