Pick #103 - Bryce Petty - QB - Baylor

If it makes you feel better to call me a 'spin master', apologist or whatever, have at it. I have watched professional football and followed it very closely for almost 50 years, and I have seen plenty of guys as talented as Smith bust and seen plenty who figure it out and are successful. It's because of that, that I'm not ready to pull the plug on this very talented, young yet undeveloped QB. I've said it before and it bears repeating here; my only loyalty is to the Jets and for them to be successful. If that means RF or BP as the QB, great, but if Smith turns the corner it represents the best situation for the Jets. We have a young inexpensive franchise QB, a solid veteran to come in in case of injury and a talented draftee who can sit, watch and develop at the appropriate pace.

Disagree with your analyst of Smith's chances of being successful, but I agree with the over all theme of the post. It would be foolish to move on from Smith with out one more chance to see if he has matured.

Don't, even if he is the best QB in camp, (not likely) want to see Petty in the mix this year. He'll be served well sitting behind Fitz for a season.

If Petty gives us best chance to win, then he starts. If its close then he sits until he is ready. I actually trust this coaching staff more than any other we have had since Parcells.

IMO kid is super talented, very smart, and by all reports a team leader. He is also as green as a QB can be. I actually think he has the natural talent to be an outstanding QB at this level.

With that said, after watching what happened with both Sanchez, and Smith, I really think he needs to sit a year if he is going to achieve his full potential. Worst thing that could happen is what happened to Sanchez. Has success his first year with a good running game, and good defense, and thinks he's there.

Just my opinion, and I think it's a moot point. Think on ready to win games right now, Fitz is by far the best ready now QB on the team.

I think there should be a best player wins competition between Smith and Fitz. Don't think there will be. Seems like Smith has a large inside edge. Don't like it, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt in this decision, and understand why they are going that way.

Just praying to much damage isn't done before the decision is finalized

i'm not so sure.. remember, gailey was the one making it sound like smith keeping the job was all but a lock.. bolwes didn't give smith the same kind of ringing endorsement..

I'm not really disagreeing with you, maybe I'm just gun shy over the recent past, but I think Fitz is the perfect QB for Petty to sit behind for a year.

Fitz doesn't have the natural tools, but has been in the league quite a while using mostly football smarts. Just think it will benefit Petty, the team, and certainly the weary fan base if the Jets have a play off run season, and Petty is NFL ready next year.

Of course, if he comes in and lights it up this summer, my opinion is subject to change.

Who cares about that? I'd just like the conversation to be about Bryce petty on the Bryce petty thread....not another Geno smith debate. I know some can't control themselves though. I haven't been posting much...pretty much because it's the same conversations as 6 months ago. But it would be nice to click the Petty thread and read about Petty, not another debate on if Geno makes it 2, 3, or 16 games...

You need to remember petty is told where to throw the ball on each pass you see. Remember, no reading or analysis is done on his part. When the play is called he already knows where to go. It's easier to look good when as you receive the snap you just stare down receiver 1 then throw. We need to see him in the preseason when he calls his first play in 5 years in a huddle, actually needs to read a d, and progress through reads the first time ever. His development will be fun to watch. But watching him in film is like watching him in shorts in practice, because nothing he did at Baylor other than throwing a football will be what he does for us. He will need to learn what being a QB means in a non-long hand off way, which is all a spread offense is. Their passing game is like a handoff, you just turn and toss it where you are told...

Sometimes a conversation leads to that. It's inevitable that a discussion about Petty, a QB, will include posts about the current starter Geno.

It always reverts to the original discussion like it just did with you and Bronx.

It's the offseason and that is the number one topic that people feel most passionate about. In two weeks, everything will be more structured not because of the mods but because there will be a ton of information for every single Jets topic, I hope. As usual, we'll monitor the board.

Right now we are all debating hypotheticals! Let's see what happens when these guys get on the field.

Now onto the topic! So Petty.........
