And those 2 teams we didn't play and the Bills did was the Chiefs and the Bengals 2 playoffs teams.. Would we have still been 10-6 if we did??

Not sure. Possibly, since one of the Jets' losses was already to one of the two teams they played and the Bills didn't, Oakland. So at worst, the Jets would have been 9-7.

who knows. on any given sunday any team can beat another. would we have played the chiefs during their 1-5 start or their hot streak to end the season? or the bengals with dalton at QB or mccarron? do you know for a fact that the bills would have won in oakland if they had the jets schedule?

Then the goal is to win 3 or 4 games in the playoffs - in other words, the Super Bowl.

I think the difference here may be semantics. Are we talking about goals, or are we talking about a good season?

Winning that game in February should always be a goal. But is it possible to have a good season without reaching that goal? If not, then 31 teams are not having a good season this year. I guarantee it. If the Panthers lose the SB by a FG, will they not have had a good season?

Sack, as you know, in order to win the Super Bowl you have to get to the play offs. I've said this before, as a fan I had a fun season. The loss to the Bills on week 17 didn't make it a good season.

From the players comments I think they agree. Fitz has said he had more fun this year then he has had in his career, but the week 17 loss was crushing.

So if the Jets made it in at 10-6, it would have been a good season. But failing to make the playoffs at 10-6 makes it not a good season.

I just don't understand that logic.

+1 It would have been easier to accept if we didn't control our fate but we did and blew it..

Ok which was better going 10-6 this year or going 9-7 in 2002 and making the playoffs and winning the East??

So if the Jets had been 10-5, but had been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, and then lost in a meaningless Week 17 game to the Bills, what would that have meant for the legacy of the season?

Which was the better team? The 2010 Seattle Seahawks, who won the NFC West at 7-9? Or the 2008 New England Patriots, who went 11-5 and did not make the playoffs?

after the ravens beat the steelers, 10-6 no longer qualified as a "good season" because 11-5 was the only way the jets could be guaranteed a playoff spot.. now if the browns beat the steelers week 17 & we went on to beat the bengals in the playoffs than yes, 10-6 would have been a "good season.."

all you can ask for as a team is to have your own destiny in your hands..

they had it & spit the bit in buffalo..

So playoffs = good season.

To me, that is far too arbitrary, and I have pointed out why in several posts.

The 7-9 Seahawks had a good season in 2010, but the 11-5 Patriots didn't in 2008. That makes zero sense to me.

well, i'll say again.. let bowles keep having "good seasons" without playoffs appearances/wins & let's see how "arbitrary" woody will find it..

if you can't get your head around that, i can't help you but i promise you woody would..

If the Jets win 10, 11 games every season but by some stroke of horrible luck keep missing the playoffs, I doubt Bowles gets canned that easily or quickly.

Basically, Bowles would be punished for the Jets being in the same division as the Pats.

i hope we can agree if bowles averages 10+ wins a season, the jets will make the playoffs more often than not..

The bottom line is you feel that 10-6 was a good satisfying season and that's fine.. But you imply that because others may disagree they are wrong.. It's not a right or wrong thing, fans can feel how they want and I for one was disappointed especially losing twice to the Bills..

We can.

Which in a way proves my point. The Jets won 10 games this year. Often, that is certainly enough to make the playoffs. Should he be blasted for not making the playoffs, or lauded for producing a record that often does make the playoffs?

My response to that would be if you blast him, you are blasting him because of the year in which he won his 10 games and the division in which his team plays. And I don't think that is necessarily fair. Neither of those factors are under his control.

I'm not saying you and others are wrong. I am saying that placing all value of a season on a playoff berth is arbitrary.

I know Pat fans that felt not making the playoffs minus Brady in 2008 with the same record 11-5 as the Fins was a disappointment.. I felt disappointment when we missed the playoffs in 1997 and 2000 as well.. If the question was did I enjoy the season in general that would be a yes..

It's disappointing. Of course it's disappointing. I would have preferred the Jets made the playoffs.

But I don't think it defines whether a season is good or not.

Why does any team suit up and play each season? For a chance to win the Superbowl. If I am 1 of the 31 teams that didn't win then I had a disappointing year.
If I do anything that is competitive, my goal is to win. If I come in 2nd out of a thousand people that may be good in some ways of thinking but I would feel like I lost because I did.

Remember when the cheatriots went 18- done? Do you think any of them thought they had a good season?
