So if the Jets finish let's say 5-12 in 2022 or 11-39 over the past 3 seasons, JD's job is still safe. Wow, just wow!!
get over the past 2 seasons.......when you rebuild there is no expectation to win right away....can't then throw that in the GM's face

first season was tainted by Adam Gase. Joe Douglas drafted with the intention of the new regime would be able to utilize said talent with potential.

2nd season, first season for new coaching regime and last year was evaluation period of the roster that was here and new additions signed and drafted.

this year they let many players walk in free agency. they signed comparable options to fill voids they felt were less to their standards and hope to improve the overall output per game next season.

so my thoughts JD gets a pass on year one with Gase. His draft picks are still under review to see if he hit on them after next season will determine who he hit on and who became misses. last year's draft have two years to prove if they are home runs or strike outs. this years draft we hope for early success, but have to understand three years will determine if they are worth the picks we spent on them.

I question the 2-3 years to evaluate a draft. Max Mitchell, Jeremy Ruckert, and Micheal Clemons, sure. For QBs, sure. But for 1st round and early 2nd round picks like Sauce, Wilson, Johnson, and Hall...if they all suck out of the gate (and I don't believe that will happen), then the draft would be questionable.

every player is given that window regardless of where they are drafted. it is only fair. some come in and day one are who they were thought to be, but the translation from college outside the SEC the level of competition is a big jump. yes these are the players that are considered that 1% talent but all the players here are already established and those rookies might come in and wow but 98% of them need one to two years to find their roles and start to produce so in year three is the year to realize are they for real or are they a bust.

@innocenti so with your idea, Zach Wilson is a bust taken 2nd overall to a team with partial talent in a new system that everyone was learning to execute their own assignment but gel as a team he failed to produce the numbers that Josh Johnson, Joe Flacco and Mike White accomplished in their short stints under center. but why did they excel and Zach didn't? oh yea they played in the system and did what they were told to do, then Wilson came back after injury bought in and started to show progress but didn't happen until 5 weeks left in the season but did he really get credit or are people still weary that he could be a bust heading into year 2?

QBs need time to develop and I never said anything to the contrary. if you re-read what I posted earlier, you'll find that it's consistent with the previous sentence.

prospects in general all need time to acclimate from the college level to the NFL it is a big jump just in level of consistent competition. some thrive early some take time to adjust but because they are deemed with potential various reasons they are given at least three years to produce. example look at Denzel Mims, drafted with vertical threat tendencies but lacked route tree success. First year produced with some circus catches but new regime came in and wanted more from him but due to circumstances out of his control the team's cafeteria serves him bad salmon which he not only loses twenty pounds but is not in any shape to practice and participate in preseason where he would of gotten most of his experience learning the new system. when he did come back his weakened immune system because of the weight loss he caught covid which he was out for another four weeks. in this whole time never heard him complain but even when available he tried to produce for the team. this off season he hires a relevant receiver coach to train him and improved his fitness to where he is not only learning the system but has improved his overall game. so year three for Mims is key, he produces he was a hit for Joe Douglas he doesn't they will cut him and draft his replacement next year.

every player, every position needs time so the average is three years for everyone no matter which position.

One other consideration is that we had basically a rookie coaching staff last year with the HC, DC and OC all first timers. Yes, JD hired them but a little perspective please.

And if the coaching staff turned out to be garbage then it be the fault of the GM.

That's simply not true. Some take longer, some take less time.

And your example is an outlier.

it's not just pass/fail.....the higher you draft a player the more you expect as a return......but that doesn't always year 1 - and in large part that could be supporting cast and/or coaching.

Perspective is lacking for some people because they’re impatient due to the long playoff drought. I believe we’ve improved this team by 4-6 wins with this off season. That my expectation. And if it’s within that range, I’m good with it. We’re probably not a serious contender in the AFC until 2023 if everything goes according to plan.

Buffalo and Kansas City are still at the top. And that’s a tall mountain to climb for teams looking up. Cleveland with Watson is gonna be tough. The Chargers are really good. Denver with Russell Wilson now. This is gonna be a tough conference for a while.

last year was the beginning for JD as far as I am concerned. I've liked just about everything he has done. This year it does need to start translating into some wins. or at worst we need to look like we are on track to be real

I believe he did say average and that's how most teams seem to operate. I know I've heard both Joe and Robert say that's the way they see it.
And I don't agree with that. Players near the top of the draft need less time then players towards the bottom of the draft. Players from bigger programs need less time than players from weaker programs. QBs tend to need more time than players in other positions.

But this digression is not even the point.

The point that is being challenged is that if the Jets have 3 lackluster seasons then JD will likely be shown the door. This statement shouldn't be controversial and I'd be willing to bet that JD himself would agree with me. But believe it or not, there are some on this forum who feel that turning a 7-9 team into let's say a 11-39 team is progress.

if we could move to the NFC we might actually contend. sucks that roles have reversed between afc and nfc just as we start to look real
