Fitzpatrick Thread -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets agree to 1-year, $12M deal

It's 7/27/16,

The team hasnt even started training camp on the field yet. Before we sign off that we will be carrying 4 QB's, lets see how Petty does against Geno Smith. Very hard to sell that we go with 4 signal callers.

My gut feeling, the organization is pulling to see their guy trump Geno. Who by the way is on his last year of his rookie contract.

Only thing is, if they cut Geno do they believe in Petty enough to be a viable back up? From what I've read it certainly sounds like Hack is not ready yet.

I thought the only reason they did not want to sign Fitz for $12M this year was due to their cap space?

I'm fine with the deal. Glad we have him, it sounds like all the players were desperate to get him back so this will go a long way in the locker room. The only downside I see, is that now we're likely going to carry four QB's on the roster which means we're skimping somewhere else.

Part of me also wishes we could see Geno play with the better talent.

In Mac we trust!

I agree but for Mac I need to see more

IMO it will depend on Petty's performance in TC. I'm sure Macc would like to release smith, but he needs a back up, and smith is cheap

Agree, he has to look in command, be more accurate and make good decisions. Alot will depend on TC and Pre season.... remember, last year when Geno was out he was the back-up and he certainly wasn't ready... we'll see, my hope is he can make the leap....

Agree 100%

IMO that was the Jets original plan. Get Fitz signed. Pray that Petty steps up in camp, and challenges smith. He really doesn't have to own him, just be in the same category, with more upside.

As you pointed out, Petty is their draft pick not smith, and no matter what happens, doubt smith is back next year as a FA. This hasn't exactly been a fun ride for geno in NYC. There are some scribes that hate him, and a lot of fans that hate him. I'll bet he wants out of NYC as bad as 70+-% of the fans do.

Problem is, Petty had weak OTA's, and mini-camp. Not the end of the world, but he needs to come out early in camp and play like he belongs.

BIG, BIG 2-3 weeks for Bryce. I like the kid a lot, so I'm hoping he can pull it off.

He actually had a very good game second pre-season game against Atlanta. He looked like he know what was going on. I was very hopeful for him. He can't afford to take a step back early.

Meanwhile, in Jetshaterville, Ryan Fitzpatrick went from being the missing link whose absence will kill them this year to being an overrated journeyman who has always sucked.

LOL

Guess it depends who your talking to.:global (14):

In all honesty, Fitz is a very good football player, with limited physical skills. Macc recognizes this, and the reason he was willing to give him 15 M guaranteed, but didn't want to pay him starter money past this season.

I'm very happy with the deal. Macc blinked, but still won. I'm praying either Petty, or Hack, can play football next season. Macc's staked a lot on it. smith won't be here.

Could QB depth be Fitz, Petty, Hack?

Macc did say they are comfortable with Petty as the #2...

Other than simply releasing Geno could they trade him? Wait til pre season when a team loses either their starter or backup to make a deal happen, would be my guess...

Need to get Petty enough reps in exhibitions to be ready

and need to get Geno enough reps to deal him for a 5th or 6th round pick

While everybody or most people seem to want to hip hip whoray about this one year signing just answer this question for me are the Jets going to win the Super Bowl this year with Fitz now let me put the disclaimer out there that I know the Jets wouldn't win a Super Bowl with Geno, Hack or Petty I'm not even quite sure that they would make the playoffs with those guys but if the Jets arent going to win the Super Bowl with Fitz then what's the point so maybe the Jets make it to the first round of the playoffs and get knocked out in a wild card (so what) I'm not happy about the signing at all unless the Jets are going to win the Super Bowl with Fitz then this is pointless to me I would rather the Jets play this year with one of the young quarterbacks to see what we have in whoever is the best one that wins in training camp and preseason games and if you want to talk about the bridge quarterback thing with Fitz and allowing either Petty or Hack the opportunity to sit another year then Geno could have done that which would've gave us an opportunity to see if Geno progressed and learned anything I'm sure I'm probably the only one who feels this way and that's cool I have no problems with being the lone dog on this one but just my opinion that's all

I would think if anyone goes, it's Geno.

Long term, I wonder if Petty projects as a long-term backup with an outside shot of being an NFL starter, and Hack projects as either a good starter or a complete bust. That may be the long-term plan.

...what does smith not paying back enemkpali $600 have to do with anything??

:global (6):

That actually cracked me up. Good job. Now if Petty can play football, and we can get your bag of rocks, I'll be a happy camper

The point may not be winning the Super Bowl this year, or ever under Fitz.

The point may be that there is nobody who can better teach Petty and Hack than a Harvard graduate, a veteran QB who knows Gailey's system better than any other QB.

This is as much about the long term as anything else.

I still want to be competitive and I think Fitz makes it more likely. However, I still think we will see one of the other QB's at some point because I don't think there a chance in hell Fitz comes close to last years stats.

Makes since and I can go with this. This would be the only reason I see the Jets doing it because I'm not quite sure they even win 10 games this year. Fitz or not!

I'm with you. Probably the typically up and down, year to year Fitz type year and this year will probably be a less then average year for him.

If he sucks we dump him next year. He has shown me nothing in his career to make me think he is more than a one year rental.
