FLORHAM PARK — The Jets on Thursday concluded their three-day mandatory minicamp with a one-hour practice.
They're now off until training camp begins in late July, as most players head home to work out on their own.
1. Injuries. Tight end Jace Amaro (back) sat out for the third straight day. So he didn't get any practice time in minicamp. He was injured last week during an organized team activities practice, but coach Todd Bowles said the injury isn't serious. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall didn't practice Thursday after having his toe stepped on Wednesday — another non-serious injury, it seems. Cornerback Darrin Walls also sustained a toe injury Wednesday and missed Thursday's practice. But it appears the most (potentially) serious injury of minicamp involved third-string tight end Zach Sudfeld, who hurt his knee Wednesday after Calvin Pryor hit him in a non-contact drill (like all drills are during the spring). "They're running more tests, so obviously it's more than just a minor injury," Bowles said. "We're trying to see exactly what it is, and what's to be done."
2. Other absences. Right guard Willie Colon (knee) continued to be limited in practice. He didn't get any reps in team periods all week. And rookie wide receiver Devin Smith missed all three days of minicamp because his girlfriend is about to give birth (or perhaps already has, as of this writing). And Dee Milliner (Achilles) and Marcus Gilchrist (shoulder) continued to work out in the rehab area during practice, as they have been doing.
3. Geno Smith solid again. He had another good day, after struggling on Day 1 of minicamp and rebounding on Day 2. He hit Chris Owusu for a perfect deep ball in a 7-on-7 drill, after Owusu beat Buster Skrine. He connected with Shaq Evans, who performed well in minicamp, on a sideline throw. Credit Evans for a sharp catch on that one, too, as he reached up to get it. Smith had an errant throw to tight end Kellen Davis during a team period, but followed it immediately with an on-the-money pass to DeVier Posey. In 7-on-7s, Smith made another good sideline throw to Jeff Cumberland, similar to the Evans pass. We'll see if Smith can keep this up in training camp. As we've mentioned over and over again, don't read too much into what happens on the field in spring practices. Bowles has said likewise.
4. Fantastic catch. Jeremy Kerley made a great grab in a team period, with Skrine covering him closely. Kerley ran down the seam and quickly twisted around to pull in the back-shoulder pass. Smith also deserves kudos for an accurate pass here. Still, this might have been the best catch of minicamp. Either this one or Marshall's grab over Walls' head on Wednesday.
5. Kicking. Nick Folk connected from 47, 49 and 51 yards, but was wide left from 42 and wide right from 45. For what it's worth (like most things that happen during no-pads practices in the spring).
