kudos to this kid for surviving a tough childhood but that does not effect an NFL scoreboard. Seems a bit of a reach in R3

Poor draft day for the Jets who separately needed OL with Fisher, Cann and Clemmings within their reach, but then again only time will tell. Regardless, not going to bed happy tonight

Love this pick and its a pick of true need. Don't know anything about this kid but his heart and dedication to fight through his life circumstances to get him to college and the NFL should show us right there what kind of player and person were getting. I was thinking and hoping for Gregory or Harold but the more I hear and read about this kid, the more I love this pick. Great job new regime.

Mauldin is an interesting pick because I viewed him as a potential 1st RD Pick entering the 2014 season, a lot people did, he would have gone no later than LATE 2 if he declared last year, probably higher, but he only had 6.5 Sacks his senior year, then ran slower than expected at the combines (4.8) and his stock took a hit.

That said, I read somewhere they he played hurt this year and was never fully healthy.

Fudbutter, its not a steal and its not a reach, most people had Mauldin projected as a 3rd RD Pick.

CBS had him as a late 2 or early 3, but for the most part he carried a solid 3rd RD Grade as a general consensus.

The 49'rs jumped us on my man Eli Harold. I'm going to root for Lorenzo, but I'll be totally honest, I watch a lot of ACC games and I don't remember him ? I hope he's a stud and not a reach.

Dang his dad in prison, his Mom was a coke dealer, and he's been in 17 Foster homes and quit H.S. Hope he becomes a star for the Jets. Go Lorenzo !

If IK ENEMKPALI is healthy next year and now adding Mauldin, we've got 2 potentially dangerous guys who can come of the edge and pressure the QB.

Gotta figure Jason Babin is out the door after this pick

Need pick. For those who were proponents of need picks over BPA, this was definitely a need pick.

I'm not gonna use scouting jargon here, I'm just gonna get right to the point and give you my feelings on this pick.

As I said on the previous page, I was well aware of Mauldin entering the 2014 season and I viewed him as a potential first round pick. In fact I expected him to declare for the draft last year and was projecting him to the Jets in RD 2 in some of my early mock drafts. I was pretty high on this kid as a 3-4 edge rushing prospect.

That said, as the 2014 season unfolded it became clear that he was not having as strong a season as I and many others expected. He wound up having a pretty good season, but a lot more was expected from this kid coming off 10 Sacks in 2013, but alas he had 6.5 and he sort of fell off my radar. I have since heard that he played hurt all year, which makes sense too me because IMO he's a better player than the 2014 #'s indicate.

Having said all that, this kid has ideal size (6' 4"/260) for a 3-4 RUSH OLB in the NFL, the forty time (4.8) was disappointing, but the intangibles are thru the roof. His passion and work ethic alone could carry him a long way, but he also plays a lot quicker than he times, he has an impressive burst off the edge, and he delivers violent hits.

What I'm saying is, its a boom or bust pick, but I wouldn't bet against him. I think the Jets hit a HR with the first two picks, and this pick, while hit or miss, has real potential to turn a good draft into a great one.

i was out tonight, so i am just catching up on the draft. i first reviewed the draft tracker and espn and saw we traded down. normally i'd like trade downs, but seeing we moved out of the spot to see houston take strong, and then see a number of guys i really liked (coleman, johnson, grayson, harold) in the spots before we picked, i am not a fan of this trade down.

now i'll admit to knowing nothing of mauldin. the brief reading tells me he's a kid who went through a tough upbringing so i'll be rooting extra for him to make it. ham's posts make me feel a little about him as a prospect, so hopefully he plays more like the potential 1st rounder he says he could have been instead of the so-so (injured?) player he was this year.

have to admit to being a bit disappointed with the trade down/resultant pick. hopefully he proves me wrong.

So who would you prefer -- 2014 Mauldin or 2015 Harold?

@nyjets: Bowles on Mauldin's speed off the edge: "I think he plays more like a 4.7, 4.65 [forty] guy than a 4.8 guy."

What I said earlier. Kid plays faster. If Bowles likes him. I like him and my gut says Bowles will make him the player we need.

Sorry Nick didn;'t see you posted Bowles Comment already.. I would have just quoted you.

Harold may be this year's Chris Borland, for the 49ers.
They better hope he doesn't retire after 1 year too.

I think you meant to say 2013 Mauldin or 2014 Harold, and I would have to say Mauldin. The seasons they had were about the same, but I would have given the edge to Mauldin because he has more ideal size and he was a little better in 2013 than Harold was in 2014, he was more of a difference maker.

I liked Harold a lot this year, but after 2013 I thought Mauldin had a higher ceiling, more of a chance to become an elite edge rusher and not just a good one.
