Very true, but that can play both ways. Geno is still on his rookie contract and cheap. Petty may be learning quicker, but experience has its merits. I can't presume to think what the CS thinks, but as a fan, if fitz goes down the thought of having two QB's with zero real game experience as the only option if Geno is sent packing is terrifying.
This is certainly a point, but I have to disagree with you that Petty has to blow smith out of the water to take the #2 job. Actually it's true, smith has much more experience then Petty, and IMO that's the one reason he's still on the team. This is a win now team.
On the other hand, the Jets don't want to use a 4th roster spot on QB if there is an alternative. They have some very talented WR's in camp they don't want to risk putting through waivers. Injuries are mounting at RB. That roster spot will be very valuable.
smith is on the final year of his contract. His odds of returning next year are very, very slim. The fans are at the point now that they are booing every incompleteion. When a QB gets to that point in NYC, it can become hell for him. Look what the fans did to both Pennington, and Sanchez. IMO both were much better football players, and better people off the field.
This has not been a good time for smith in NY. If he keeps sulking and not talking to the media because he got booed, it's going to get a lot worst. IMO there is no way smith will come back and play here, no matter what happens.
IMO if Petty plays close to the level of smith for the remainder of camp, the Jets will be very tempted to move smith.
I think smith is lucky they are on the road next week. It's still a long shot, but I think it's possible that smith might not be on the final roster.
Like Dan, I am a fan of Petty's. Any one who was on the board last spring knows I was touting Petty hard.
