Same here. I actually have a signed photo of Buddy squaring off with Rose back in 73. Classic.

Wow, me too! 1973 is when I really started to get into the Mets! I hated pete Rose and was so excited when they got Willie Mays, not realizing he was a shell of his former self. I take it we're all around the same age?

I was at that playoff game in 72. My dad took me to the game -- I was always a big Buddy Harrelson fan -- mainly because he was the littlest guy out there and I was somewhat vertically challenged while growing up. I am still a bit vertically challenged as an adult, but I just don't care anymore.

I still remember Sparky Anderson pulling his team from the field after debris rained down on Rose. Group of Mets players went out to try to calm the crowd and announcements over the PA that Mets were in danger of forfeiting.

I might still have the ticket stub from that game somewhere among my sport memorabilia collection.

Wow! What a surprising and enjoyable regular season. Never even considered we'd be division champs at the beginning of the season. These young pitchers are remarkable... so poised and so talented.

Anything can happen in a short series with this kind of talent. Now if only Duda can stay hot...what a difference his bat will make in the playoffs.

Belated Congratulations on winning the NL East, Mets fans.

I saw this coming back in July, before they added Cespedes. I said with one big bat or two this team is a monster waiting to happen, and thats exactly what happened when Sandy added Cespedes.

Below is the exchange I had with Golden following a brutal loss for the Mets in extra innings, or maybe the Mets won that game, I can't recall, I was too focused on the bigger picture:

I'm a Yankee fan, but I see the Mets as being "this close" to having a dominant 5+ Years run. Their young starting pitching is the envy of baseball. Harvey, Syndergard, DeGrom and Matz, wholly chit, we could be looking at a run like the Braves had in the 90's. All the Mets need to do is add another bat or two and they are going to be lethal.

I agree with you about the future. But you have to understand my frame of mind right now. I have been sitting on the couch for the last 5 hours, watching 15 innings of baseball in which the Mets are 1-21 with runners in scoring position. I am not sure how they even scored a run today. Its been painful to watch.

No doubt their offense is putrid, that has to be a major point of emphasis in the off season, but if they can fix that and just become an average offensive team, WATCH OUT because this young pitching staff is reminiscent of what the Braves built in the 90's, and they can dominate the NL to the same degree, they just need some run support, then they will run through the NL like a hot knife through butter.

IMO the Mets are now the favorites to win the World Series on the strength of their pitching.

I don't know and I don't care if the oddsmakers see it the same way, IMO their pitching makes them the favorites.

Reminds me of the 69' Mets ('Miracle Mets' my ass, that was no miracle, that team could pitch!), all this team needs is for someone like Cespedes to stay hot in the post season and be their Clendenon, their pitching will do the rest.

They have the nucleus of what could be something special. Which in one reason I don't want them to do anything crazy at the trade deadline. This team is more than one bat away. I just have no faith that Sandy Alderson will be able to build that offense.

Thanks, Ham.

Don't think I have ever been so happy to have been so wrong. I see you didn't post my next comment from that exchange in July. That one was even more off base. What a great job by Alderson rebuilding the offense at the end of July. d'Arnaud and Wright back from injury. Bringing up Conforto. Adding Cespedes, Johson and Uribe. And probably the best move of all, not making the Carlos Gomez trade. Wound up with Cespedes instead and Flores production in the 2nd half was probably better than Houston wound up getting out of Gomez.

Irony is the pitching was probably stronger in the first half, the bats were the big difference down the stretch.

Bring on the Dodgers!!!!

You weren't at all wrong in my view. You agreed with me that this team was setting itself up for big success with their young flamethrowers in the near future, you just didn't think they had enough offense to take it the distance this year, and when we had that conversation back in July you were absolutely right, they didn't have enough offense to compliment the pitching, I totally agreed with you about that. I was talking more about starting next year for Mets run of dominance, when they had an off-season to add a big bat or two, but that Cespedes trade changed everything, Sandy said to hell with next year, we're taking a run at a championship RIGHT NOW!!

That he was able to add Cespedes without trading any of the BIG 4 Pitchers was an absolute coup.

Needless to say Cespedes has been everything Mets fans could have hoped for and more. IMO he's the catalyst who really changed everything for this team offensively. Then when you add in the return of Wright and the catcher, and the young LHH (Conforto) making a solid contribution, all of the sudden you have enough offense to compliment this dynamic young pitching staff, no need to wait for next year anymore.

I hope the Mets win it all. And I'm a lifelong Yankee fan
I feel bad for Mets fans, they suffered through a lot of hardship over the past twenty years, first living through a Yankees dynasty which couldn't have been easy for them (and I'm a Yankees fan too), then a rash of injuries for quite a few years, to the point where they seemed snake-bitten. I'm glad for Mets fans that they are finally tasting some real success again, and if my Yankees can't win it (and I don't see how they can), then I wish the best for Mets fans.

That said, I really believe they're gonna win it all this years, now they have some offense to compliment the pitching, and as for the pitching, those four horsemen of the apocoplyse (Harvey, Syndergarden, DeGrom and Matz) are a nightmare in a short series. When you can throw one of those guys out there for every game, its a nightmare for the opposition.

The grass is greener over here. Your "Front Runner" days must now reside in Flushing.
We welcome you openly to the "New" New York Dynasty!

Murphy 3 run bomb, Conforto 2 run opposite field.

Honestly, I'm going to miss Murphy next year. Great teammate & lockerroom leader.

I'd like us to re-sign Cespedes but if it doesn't happen I hope they keep Murphy.

I realize Herreira is waiting in the wings, but Murphy is the perfect utility guy... plug him in anywhere.

Well, we didn't get HFA against LA, but, we did win 90 games like Sandy predicted.

Glad we didn't get swept by Nats in a meaningless series.

To be honest, we play better away from Citi... less pressure on the young guys.

Thank heavens Cuddyer didn't cost us the game and Conforto will be in LF tonight!Thor vs. Greinke... I hope Thor can control his emotions and his pitches. Once again, a shutout will have to be thrown by a Mets starter. Same approach applies as last night, need to get Greinke deep in to counts. That 12 pitch AB by Wright set the tone for Met hitters. We need Cespedes to come up big tonight. Murphy and Duda had nice games last night in the field and at the plate.
